06-Mar-20 The Apprentice 5 - It’s that good

You knew it was going to happen…. The pettiness and “group think” won out and Brent was sent packing.  We are disappointed with the Synergy team members and even you, Mr. Trump.

Tonight we talk about the Post Cereal challenge to design a billboard to promote Post’s new cereal Grapenuts Trailmix Crunch.  Did anyone else wonder why the teams didn’t talk to anyone at Post to learn the new cereal’s target market?  Synergy’s idea is “Blah, blah, blah, blah (okay, you guys get the idea)….. The next generation”.  Wordy, bad choice of models and poor presentation (the task was a billboard NOT a presentation) - Synergy you lose.  Gold Rush’s idea is “It’s that good.”  The Post Executives loved it and Gold Rush wins the opportunity to cook with a top chef.  The Boardroom is pathetic and in the end Brent is out.

Our topics for this week are:

  • Less is More
  • Brent

Jeez — I just realized we have two Sean’s on the scene. Just to be clear, we have OUR Sean (Sean UK) who comments on this blog and was a guest on Armchair Apprentice late last year and then there is Sean (also from the UK but he’s the one from the television show) who, unlike Sean UK could not express his thoughts publicly.

    We love our Sean UK.

Sean from the TV show The Apprentice – the jury is still out. We love the accent but you’re as catty a pretty little school girl. Strap on a set, man.

I must say that a big part of why I like the podcast is the chemistry between you two. You are a cute couple. Keep it up big guy (and, uhhh …big girl ? ! ?). What penance did Mike do for THAT comment?

Ohhhhh - he will be paying for that for a while!! Back rubs, foot massages and unloading the dishwasher - for weeks, months, years I think that is fair. Oh yea, Man, my car is a little dirty too….

The stunned look on his face after saying that still makes me laugh!!! (good thing he doesn’t really think of me that way or he would be in BIG trouble)

    Thanks for listening!

The car’s not the only thing that’s a little dirty — if ya know what I mean ;-)

By the way folks, I sent a specific invitation to Brent to listen to this week’s show. I wonder if the Donald has rules about listening to this kind of stuff?

You were talking about how Brent was soooo picked on, don’t you remember the girls all ganging up on Stacey J calling her crazy and unstable???? Happens every season!

  6. Riley Says:

Brent was an extremist. Everything had to be his way or else. He was the best. He was the greatest. It got old.

It started with the first episode. “Killer Instinct.” Not a terrible idea, but when it gets rejected he gets flustered and fights back. Then when his ideas are rejected later in the first episode, he again gets frustrated. In the second episode, he gets cut off by Stacey. He blows up at her. Yes, she also lost it and that’s why I said both of them should have been fired. People cut you off all the time. I got cut off today. BFD. Grow up and get over it. Andrea “managed” him. She politely tasked him to the side. Tammy did a poor job managing him by assigning him a ridiculous task. And then–and I still don’t believe this–Ivanka comes in and gives the pot a good stir.

I can’t judge Brent as a person or as a businessman. What I can do is judge him as a contestant on this show. He submitted himself to a competition that is as much about personality as it is about skills. He reveled in that. He celebrated his argumentative skills. He threatened people with his prowess in the boardroom. He championed his friends outside of the show.

Brent had a dozen opportunities to mend things between he and his fellow contestants. From the first episode he chose to fight rather than cooperate. While the others may have been mean, evil, and underhanded, Brent chose his path.

As much as I try, since I was one of those kids that got picked on in middle and high school, I just can’t feel sympathy for Brent. He didn’t even attempt to compromise.

I have to disagree with Riley.

Brent wasn’t extreme, it wasn’t his way or else, because he never got his way. It was always their way and he did every job they gave him no matter how insulting or how menial it was. In fact they never once complained about the quality of his work. And yes he got frustrated but he only expressed his frustration to the camera. I also find it hard to see anyone who raies his hand to ask a question as pushy.

As for his dust up with Stacy, Pepi as project manager gave Brent the floor, Stacy kept cutting Brent off, Pepi as PM should have reminded her that he had given Brent the floor and to wait her turn, but he didn’t. Brent then followed standard corporate procedure and asked to speak to her alone, to settle their problem. They had a fight but she’s the one who made a federal case of it. She’s the one who went back to their boardroom crying that the fat guy had scared her. She’s the one who caused the team to waste the whole day with her whining and her poor scared me attitude, not Brent.

In fact Brent never complained about his treatment till the final boardroom when he was fighting for his job. He acknowledged that he knew what they were doing, but he never once said poor me, instead he said I’ll show them they are wrong.

Kudos to Brent cause he took it much longer than I would have .

I think what bothers me the most about both his treatment and his firing was that it was because he was different not because he failed at a task.

  9. Debbie Says:

Hi! LOVE your show! I look forward to it every week.

As for Brent. I felt bad for him. All he wanted was to be listened to. Isn’t that what everyone wants? He was the chubby kid we all knew in grade school. Because they wouldn’t listen, he kept pushing himself on people. He ideas may or may not have been any good. but no one listened to find out. All the team had to do was listen and acknowledge his idea. You don’t have to use it. The team just shoved him aside.

I thought his taking Stacy aside in a previous episode was the way to handle that situation. He didn’t attack her in front of the group. He pulled her aside to talk with her. Isn’t that technique of people skills taught in schools everywhere? Stacy’s accusing him of attacking her was amazing!! I was glad she got the “boot” because of that.

As for the comment about Brent not being as valuable (or successful, words to that effect) because he didn’t make as much money as another team member, is that how success is measured? By income? Guess Mother Theresa, our troops around the world and the countless social workers, teachers and volunteers should pack it in because according to those standards, they are not successful at all. How sad that is the barometer used to measure worth.

How much do you want to bet if Brent was thin and good looking NONE of this would have happened. The team was prejudiced from the beginning because of his outer appearance.

    Again, love show!

Brent….Brent….Brent…. What were you thinking!….. He played right into there little game. He even said himself, “no matter if I go into the boardroom or not, save me a seat at this table, because I will be back”. Again this week, they had nothing on him. If they brought him into the boardroom, They would have looked like fools. I think Ivanka was even starting to see he was the scapegoat. He had no reason to get all worked up, by giving him stupid pointless tasks, they saved him for another week, but he couldn’t shut up! Why would you rant and rave if you knew you were safe????

I’m looking forward to see who they blame their incompetence on from here on out. This group is unreal!!! If I had to work with these clowns I would be on trial for choking the shit out of somebody. I can not believe these people are successful in the real world. None of them have people skills. They are a bunch of backstabbing, finger pointing, little ass kissers! I don’t care what their net worth is. TRASH is TRASH!

Marji-Just for the record, Andrea is a bitch…..I didn’t say I liked her. I said she showed leadership ability in the way she handled Brent for that challenge. I can’t stand her or any of the clowns…..Why do I watch you ask…..Everybody loves to watch a train wreck!!!!! And it gives me a reason to listen to you guys every week!

Well, the inevitable happened and Brent’s lynching was made complete. Granted he never would have made it to the end, but I’m dissappointed with the way this all went down. Maybe I just empathize automatically with the underdog. I’m unimppressed with how the team treated him.

Two people REALLY lucked out this week and got a “get out of jail free card”–Andrea and Sean. They both screwed up and would have been on the chopping block. Essentially they lost because the design was TOO BUSY.

Actually, the model choosers should be dinged too for picking a guy that looked like the other model’s brother…not father. Some extreme incompetence went unnoticed. I hope they all thank Brent for saving their behinds indirectly.

Hey Mike, regarding your regularity…. Maybe Post could do two billboards of you, spaced out about a half mile. First one shows you pouring the cereal down your throat, the second one could have you over a toilet letting loose. Tag line…IT’S THAT GOOD! ( of course you would be doing the shooter McGavin and wink at the same time)

It’s about as good as anything these morons did!

  13. Slappy McGee Says:

Michael. Did you really compare Brent to Jesus Christ? My goodness. You did. Good lordy! I know he took some beatings here recently, but my-my-my…

Brent was doing so well holding it in while in the boardroom, and I thought he was gonna make it through … but then he imploded on himself. He really did it to himself with his outrageous comment and lost control (like his hair. - We said “Be like Trump”… but we didn’t mean “BE like Trump.” Oh, Brent… I mean, Jesus.)

But enough about Brentus Christ, here’s what I wanted to say:

DAMN, I’m tired of them telegraphing the results during the show. Is anyone else irritated by this?

The card that said “Keep it Simple, Stupid” or something like that, totally telegraphed the winner of the trial. I saw it and just moaned (and not in a good way.)

Then all the Brent forshadowing with him on the stoop and making promises at the dinner table… it was so obvious Trump was firing him.

Man, I’m tired of all that.

    I want surprise!
    I want suspense!
    I want Ivanka!

    … er… sorry about that…

    You know what I meant.
